Merton Hymn

(This a poetic setting of the Thomas Merton Prayer written for Ash Wednesday)
I’ve no idea, Lord my God,
Where I am going to.
I cannot see the path I trod,
I hope it follows You.
I cannot know for certain where
this road I’ve chosen leads,
nor am I really self aware
enough to judge my deeds.
For thinking that I do Your will
does not mean that I do,
but I desire to please You still
and that’s what pleases You.
O Lord, I pray that this desire
will burn inside my heart
and all my actions are inspired
by this and none apart.
For if I do this, you will lead
me down the road that’s right
for when we follow we won’t need
to walk by sense of sight.
O lord my God, I trust you though
it seems some times I’m lost.
If through the valley I’m to go,
if by the storm I’m tossed,
in all these things, I will not fear
for I am still your own
and you, O Lord, won’t leave me here
to face these snares alone.
